When following a whole food, plant-based diet, it can be a challenge to find meals that are easy to take on the go. We discovered these instant soups from Dr. McDougall’s Right Foods and they are a great option for travel or just keeping around as a backup meal!

Since we try to keep our sodium intake low, we decided to check out three of the “lower sodium” varieties: “Chicken” Noodle, Black Bean & Rice and Split Pea. All of the soups are vegan and have no added oil.

Preparation is very simple. You pull off the lid, add the flavor packet, fill with water and stir. If you have boiling water, you can just add that and cover with a plate (or something else to keep the lid down) for 5 to 8 minutes (depending on the soup). If you don’t have boiling water, you add room temperature water, stir, microwave, and then cover for the instructed amount of time. Either way, if you have access to hot water or a microwave, you’ll be able to carry these shelf-stable soups with you and prepare with ease!

This review is NOT sponsored. We purchased these soups at a local grocery store. They normally cost $1.69 at our store, but we got them on sale for $1.25!

The Contestants

Chicken Noodle – This one has noodles, corn, carrots, and green onions and is meant to taste like a traditional chicken noodle soup – minus the chicken! The flavor packet creates a nice savory broth.

Black Bean & Rice – We were expecting the beans to be pretty dry, but they actually ended up nice and creamy! Paired with the rice, this one is a hearty, filling soup. I recommend letting it sit to cool for a few minutes because it will thicken up as it cools.

Split Pea – This one surprised us the most with its smoky smell! The texture was creamy but not exactly smooth… if that makes sense. It also thickened as we let it cool down a bit.

The Winner?

All three soups were really tasty! Since the nutrition stats and price are pretty much the same across the board, we let the judging on this one come down to flavor. Be sure to watch the video so you can see us prepare and taste each variety.

Brian liked the Split Pea best, Black Bean & Rice second and Chicken Noodle third. In true Brian-Jessica fashion, I ranked mine in the exact opposite order. Chicken Noodle was my favorite, followed by Black Bean & Rice and Split Pea.
