It is no secret that I love chocolate! I’ve never been a coffee drinker, so for me there’s nothing better in the cold months than a nice mug of hot chocolate. Last winter, I tried to make a whole food, plant-based version, but I didn’t really know what I was doing. Now that I have another year of this lifestyle under my belt, I decided to give it another try!
I’ve been making hot chocolate almost every night for a few weeks in search of the perfect ratio for the ingredients. Everyone will have a different preference for how “chocolatey” and sweet they want it, so you might need to do your own trial and error to figure out your perfect blend!
For this recipe, you’ll need a blender (preferably high speed like a Vitamix) and just three ingredients: almond milk, unsweetened cocoa powder and Medjool dates.
I’ve been loving the Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa powder, but you can use your favorite kind – just make sure it is unsweetened. You can also substitute other plant-based milks for the almond milk or make your own, but I usually have unsweetened vanilla almond milk on hand at all times, so I use that.
I keep my Medjool dates in the freezer and then let them soak in some hot water for a few minutes before blending. I use about 40g of pitted dates, but you can add more or less, depending on how sweet you like it!

3-Ingredient Vegan Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- – 1 1/4 cups of almond milk
- – 1 heaping Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- – 40g pitted Medjool dates (about 2-3 dates; soaked in 1/4 cup hot water)*
Directions
- Remove the pits and soak the dates in 1/4 cup hot water for about 5-10 minutes.
- Measure your almond milk and cocoa powder into a blender. Once the dates are softened, add them to the blender as well, along with the 1/4 cup of hot water they were soaking in.
- If you are using a blender that can safely heat up food (like a Vitamix), you can blend everything until it is hot. For my Vitamix, it takes about 3 1/2 minutes of blending on the highest speed. It can splatter a bit through the lid (since it is not completely sealed in order to allow steam to escape), so I recommend holding a paper towel gently on top of the lid while it blends.
- If your blender cannot safely heat up food (most regular blenders can’t), simply blend for 30 to 60 seconds until everything is incorporated. Then pour into a microwave safe mug and heat for about 90 seconds. You can also heat it in a saucepan on the stove.
- Enjoy!
Makes about 1 1/2 cups of hot chocolate.
*You can also substitute 2 Tbsp of maple syrup for the dates. Simply add all of the ingredients to your blender and follow the remaining instructions above.
And that’s it! Just three ingredients and a few minutes in a blender, and you’ll have a nice, warm cup of hot chocolate to enjoy.
You can divide this into two smaller mugs, but I usually end up drinking the entire thing myself 🙂

Why not just warm up some chocolate almond milk?
Yum! This was creamy and delicious. I normally use stevia or coconut sugar but liked the sweetness of the dates. I’m a serious chocoholic so I used closer to 2 tbs. of cocoa powder. My niece owns and operates a bean to bar chocolate company and museum in the Caribbean. She just brought me some cocoa powder when she visited. I’d love to send you some. It’s organic with no fillers. Her website is Morugacocoa.wordpress.com if you want to check it out. Let me know if you’d like to try it. I will share my stash with you!
Thanks Teri! I’ll let you know when we get our P.O. Box set up 😀
Thank you, this is an awesome recipe. Curled up in front of the TV, watched a sappy movie and enjoyed my hot chocolate.
Glad you enjoyed it Valerie 🙂
Made it…loved it! Thanks for sharing:)
Thank you Jeanette!
The hot chocolate is perfect….even on a hot afternoon in Thailand. I’m doing my bible study with your hot chocolate recipe. Couldn’t get better.
This makes me so happy to hear 🙂 Thanks Joy!
I found myself wandering around the produce department of Kroger looking for dates. My husband found me and told me I might be making the other shoppers a wee bit nervous. Turns out I was muttering (a bit louder than I thought) I NEED this hot chocolate. Where on earth are the stupid dates?? 😜
LOL! They are always in the produce department at ALDI with the fruit. We don’t have Kroger here so I am not sure… but maybe they just didn’t have any in?
Just got a VitaMix and this was my first heated recipe. It is SO yummy! Thank you for sharing
Yayyy! So glad you liked it 🙂
I got a Vitamix for an early Christmas gift this year. This was the first thing I made in it as well!
Just made this for the second time. The first time I didn’t have a Vitamix, and even though I soaked the dates, it still felt a little grainy. This time, I had a Vitamix and I added a half tsp of vanilla extract since I buy plain almond milk. It was awesome! I’m enjoying it while I type this. It was the first thing I made in my new Vitamix. Love watching your videos ! Thanks so much for sharing. It gives me hope that I can do this and finally stop struggling with my weight.
The Vitamix definitely makes a BIG difference! I was reluctant to invest in one at first, but I’m soooo glad I did. Glad you’ve been enjoying the hot chocolate. It is snowing here in St. Louis today, so I think I’ll make a mug of it later 🙂 Thanks for watching.
I’ve made this recipe at least a dozen times over the last couple of months. SO. TASTY. Thank you for sharing!
PS – love your YouTube videos
Glad you like it Mandy! Thank you for watching! 🙂
Yay! Did this from memory and got it right even though I had to substitute. : ) I don’t have space to have my blender out until I rearrange things, so I used maple syrup instead of blending up the dates. I added vanilla because our milk is plain. Also, I had accidentally bought an “original” almond milk rather than “unsweetened original” – so I’m using it up in this way. : ) I was having trouble figuring out what to do for coffee (which I have morning and night, caffeine does not really impact me) because I’m used to having it with milk and plenty of sweetener. So much processed sweetener or processed sugar would equal waaaaay too many dates. Switching to chocolate may just be the answer – it’s less bitter than coffee, and I LOVE chocolate!!! I’ve enjoyed blended coffee/hot chocolate in the past… hmm, I’ll have to experiment. Thank You, Jessica!
This has become a staple for me. Easy and delicious. I often add a splash of almond extract to mine. Thanks for sharing.
