Back in 2022, I went through a period where I was obsessed with buffalo sauce. I was using a store bought brand, and although it didn’t have any animal products in it (a lot of them use butter!), the amount of salt and random ingredients I couldn’t pronounce were not something I wanted to continue using.

So, I set off on a journey to create my own whole food, plant-based buffalo sauce. It ended up being quite the complicated process. We’ll be sharing that in a future video, but for today’s recipe we are sharing one of the by-products of my testing process… Buffalo Hummus!

This recipe is super easy to whip together, although I do recommend a high speed blender like a Vitamix to get the best consistency. Our “secret” ingredient, a stalk of celery, really brings all of the flavors together.

Spicy Buffalo Hummus

RECIPE BY KROCKS IN THE KITCHEN

Ingredients

  • 2 x 15oz cans garbanzo beans (no salt added if possible)
  • – 1 cup reserved liquid from cans of garbanzo beans (aquafaba)
  • – 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp distilled white vinegar
  • – 1 tsp lemon juice
  • – 1/4 cup (64g) tahini *see note below
  • – 1 Tbsp white miso paste
  • – 1 stalk celery, roughly diced
  • – 2 Tbsp paprika (we do NOT recommend smoked paprika for this recipe)
  • – 1/2 Tbsp cayenne pepper (this will be SPICY; adjust for your taste)
  • – 2 tsp garlic powder
  • – 1 tsp onion powder
  • – OPTIONAL: 1/4 to 1/2 tsp salt

Directions

  1. Open your cans of garbanzo beans and separate the beans from the liquid. We usually press down the lid after opening it and drain the liquid directly into a measuring cup. Not all cans are equal! Some cans will have more liquid than others, so be sure to only include 1 cup in your hummus. This will help you get the best consistency. If you have extra liquid, save it just in case you need more to make it blend. If you don’t have quite 1 cup, don’t worry! You can always add a little bit of water to make up the difference.
  2. Pour the garbanzo beans + measured amount of aquafaba into your blender container. Add remaining ingredients.
  3. Blend on high for 1-2 minutes, until your desired level of “creaminess” is attained. We recommend using a Vitamix or other high speed blender. If you have a “regular” blender, you may have to blend longer or add extra liquid.
  4. Store in an air-tight glass container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Enjoy!
  • *NOTES:
  • – Makes approximately 4 cups of hummus. Leftovers can be frozen.
  • – For the tahini, make sure you buy one that only has ONE ingredient – ground sesame seeds. We like to use Trader Joe’s brand.

We like to serve it up with a nice tray of fresh veggies. It’s perfect to bring to a party!

As always, we’d love to hear from you if you make the recipe. You can find us on Instagram and Facebook – don’t forget to tag us if you post a photo!
