Prior to switching over to a whole food, plant-based diet, I will admit, I didn’t fully “get” Trader Joe’s. I felt the same way about Aldi before I met Brian. He took me to Aldi for the first time and I felt like I was on another planet. Soon Aldi would become my first (and favorite) stop on grocery day. Now Trader Joe’s is catching up at a close second place!

Trader Joe’s has a ton of products that make following this lifestyle just a little bit easier. We decided to make a “Top 10” list of our favorite products from Trader Joe’s, since they have so many unique products! Of course, all of these products are vegan as well.

This post is NOT sponsored or endorsed by Trader Joe’s in any way. We purchased all of the products with our own money. These are all products we use on a regular basis.

#10: Jicama Sticks

Found in the refrigerated section of the store (near the bags of lettuce), these pre-cut Jicama Sticks make a great addition to our salads! We like to buy these and cut them up into a smaller dice as part of our weekly salad prep. Jicama is a root vegetable and looks similar to the inside of a raw potato, but tastes crunchy and sweet – closer to an apple.

#9: Smoked Paprika

Trader Joe’s has a decent selection of spices that won’t break the bank. We started buying Smoked Paprika there a while ago. It gives a nice “smoky” flavor to hummus, soups and more. We recently started adding it to our pizza sauce when we make veggie pizzas and it is super tasty!

#8: Cruciferous Crunch Collection

This lovely mix of shredded kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, green cabbage & red cabbage makes another great addition to our salads! We do find that it is best to use this up within 2-3 days of opening. Sometimes there are quite large pieces in this, so we always use our salad chopper to break it up into even smaller pieces. Cruciferous vegetables have a ton of health benefits, so this is an easy way to get in a variety of those without having to clean and prep each individually. Basically, it is a nice lazy way to get in your veggies! 🙂

#7: Mixed Nut Butter

Trader Joe’s Mixed Nut Butter contains almonds, cashews, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, pecans & walnuts! It DOES have a little bit of added sea salt, but nothing else added. A lot of nut butters contain added sugar and a bunch of other ingredients, so this one is fairly “clean” in that regard. My favorite way to eat this is on a slice of Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Bread with a sliced banana on top. The oil from the nuts can separate and as a result, it does require quite a bit of stirring when you initially open it. We find it best to shake it up a lot before you open for the first time. Also make sure you store this one in the refrigerator.

#6: Everything But The Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend

This buzz-worthy seasoning contains sesame seeds, sea salt flakes, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, black sesame seeds & poppy seeds. We had a jar of this on hand before we switched over to a whole food, plant-based diet. Since it does have some salt in it, we put it up on the top shelf with the other seasonings we could no longer use. However, a few weeks ago we took it down and tried just a few shakes on top of our salads. It actually doesn’t have as much salt as we originally thought it did, so we figure a few shakes here and there isn’t going to kill us. 🙂 We actually plan to make our own salt-free version of this in the future, so let us know if you want to see a video of that!

#5: Whole Wheat Pita Pockets

Pita pockets are a great addition to your lunch or dinner. We like to put them in our toaster for about 4 minutes until they get a bit crunchy and then cut them in half and spread hummus or queso on them. You can also cut them into triangles and bake in the oven until they are crispy pita chips! We have also stuffed salad inside of these on days when we just couldn’t get through another salad (back at the beginning of our journey – now we love our salads). They also make a nice accompaniment to Trader Joe’s Riced Cauliflower Bowl!

Trader Joe’s has two sizes to choose from. We like to buy the smaller version, which has 8 pita pockets per package and 100 calories per pita.

#4: Riced Vegetable Medley

Riced veggies are all the rage lately and for a good reason! We use riced cauliflower in place of (or alongside) brown rice to bulk up our dishes. This blend contains cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, green onion & yellow onion – all chopped into nice “rice-size” pieces. We love that it gives you so much variety all in one package. You can find this in the refrigerated section (near the bags of lettuce), but we always put it directly into the freezer once we get home. It will stay fresh for several months this way.

This will definitely show up in some of our future recipe videos, so stay tuned!

#3: Tahini

Not all Tahini is created equal! Just like nut butters, you will find that some Tahini has a lot of other added ingredients. Trader Joe’s version contains just one ingredient: organic ground sesame seeds. You will need to stir it quite a bit as the natural oil from the sesame seeds will separate over time. We shake it up before opening for the first time, store it at room temperature, and stir it up again each time we open it. We use this mainly for our hummus recipe, but you can also use it to make delicious salad dressings or a sauce to coat vegetables with before roasting.

#2: Riced Cauliflower Bowl

Found in the frozen section, this Riced Cauliflower Bowl makes a great “emergency” meal for those days/nights when you don’t have anything prepped and need a quick meal. We already recorded a separate video review for this one, so be sure to check that out. The frozen meal has a Tahini sauce, marinated chickpeas, sweet potatoes, baked tofu & roasted onions. There is some oil in this dish, but it is a better choice when you are in a bind than a lot of other things you could eat! Try it with a pita pocket!

#1: Organic Creamy Cashew Fiesta Dip

If you watched our oil-free, vegan queso review video, you know that I love queso! Although our initial review of this one was mixed, since then we have started using it regularly. You’ll find this in the refrigerated section next to the hummus. Don’t eat it cold. It says you can on the package, but it doesn’t taste good cold. Transfer to a microwave safe bowl, cover and heat it up for about 30 seconds. Then stir and you’ll have a nice, creamy texture.

We like to use this as the “cheese” on top of our veggie pizzas. Make sure you heat it up and stir first, then put on your pizza and bake in the oven. It adds a nice cheesy flavor! We also like to spread some on top of the toasted pita pockets for a nice addition to our dinner salads.

So there you have it! These are the Top 10 Products we love to buy at Trader Joe’s. Let us know in the comments section below what YOUR favorite Trader Joe’s finds are!

Maybe you can help me! I’ve watched all your videos. I look forward to watching more. I’ve purchased almost all the products in your top 10 trader Joe’s, except for the cruciferous veggies.

    I am a lot like Penn. I am 6’7″ started at 408 and I’m down to 340. I’ve just started a 10/4 I-Fast and it’s working for me well.

WELL! Your site thinks I’m a bot. Darn! Let me try without my website.

I love beans, potatoes, rice, onions and other flavorful vegetables.
But I hate the taste of green. I hate Avocado, which isn’t important.
I also hate the taste of cruciferous vegetables. I’ve tried vinegar, mixing in with beans, rice and onions (YUCK!!!), today I’m going to try cooking them a little in vegetable broth.
Can you suggest a way to add flavor to Kale and other cruciferous veggies without Salt, oil or sugar?
    Thanks!
    MIKE

    • Hi Mike! Thank you for watching and sharing your story with us here! Congrats on your progress so far! Brian is 6’6″ 🙂

Brian doesn’t like the cruciferous veggies as much as I do, so his salads have less than mine. He uses more spinach, but still throws in a bit of the cruciferous veggies if we have them on hand. I think using the hummus as a salad dressing makes a big difference because it adds a ton of flavor that can help “mask” the taste of the greens.

I hate avocado as well, but Brian likes that. We are pretty much opposite in everything LOL.

Do you ever make smoothies? We don’t make them a lot, but they are nice every once in a while. I will say, I tried throwing a TON of kale into a smoothie when we first started this process, and I hated it! You have to start with something that isn’t as strong of a flavor (like spinach) and work in the kale a bit at a time. Also using frozen bananas will help since the natural sweetness from the bananas will make it taste better!

So you don’t like broccoli or cauliflower either, right? We have been enjoying eating raw broccoli and cauliflower with hummus as a dip. It still boggles my mind how good the raw broccoli/hummus combo is… it should not taste as good as it does to me now.

We have roasted broccoli and cauliflower after coating with a mixture of equal parts water, tahini and lemon or lime juice. You mix it together really well and then toss with the veggies to coat and use a lot of your favorite no-salt seasonings. Then put it on a baking sheet lined with a silicone baking mat (like Silpat) or parchment paper. We bake at 375 for about 40 minutes or so.

We also get in kale with our veggie soup. I don’t really notice it in the soup, but then again I don’t mind the taste of kale!

Let us know if you have tried any of these ideas – and we will let you know if we think of any other ideas!

One thing I learned from Chef AJ regarding the Cruciferous Crunch is to put it in the Instant Pot. I do this in the 3qt IP with 2 cups of water, set to 0 minutes (yes zero because it takes a few minutes for the pressure to go up and by then it is done). The veggies are soft and they literally shrink a ton. I put some flavored balsamic vinegar on there (take a look at California Balsamic.com for some wonderful options). Then the water that is left over Chef AJ calls “pot liquor” and frankly I really love the stuff, don’t throw it away. Hope this helps!

Super helpful, thanks!! My top products at TJ: definitely the nuts and nut butters, including tahini. The prices can’t be beat! I also love the polenta and the wild rices!

    • Thanks for sharing! We get most of our nuts there too since they have such a great selection. We will have to check out the polenta! I think we actually might have some wild rice from there in our pantry right now…

What are the other items you wanted to include in the list? I’ve only shopped at Trader Joe’s once, because it isn’t very close to my house, but you’ve made me want to go back.

    • Here are a few other items we love to buy at Trader Joe’s!

      – Peanuts Go On A Date Bars
      – Mushroom Umami Seasoning
      – 3 Seed Beet Crackers (These do have some oil in them, but they are a nice special occasion treat! Also like the Sweet Potato ones!)
      – Sprouted Extra Firm Tofu
      – Nutritional Yeast
      – Red Lentil Pasta (I like this, but Brian isn’t a huge fan. He said it was too chewy, but I like the chewiness!)

    HI Jessica and Brian,

    Love your videos!

I tried the jicama from TD and actually had an allergic reaction.

Have you ever tried kohlrabi? It’s my favorite cut up and make raw veggie stick go to.

You can’t get it everywhere but when you find it, you will always seek it out….

    cheers,
    Teresa

I haven’t heard of Aldi’s here in Oregon or Washington; but my favorite TJ’s items are live Basil plants, whole wheat pastas and organic sprouted tofu in the double pack.

I follow McDougall’s no-added-fat lifestyle so too many of your favorites are not for me.

  6. G M says:

Jessica, I love the chemistry between you two. You both are adorable and respectful.
What I like most is, you both are down to earth people.
I have watched most of your videos.
I used to eat salad as a treat and now that I learned from you how to keep it ready for a week, I am doing it and it has become MUST in my daily routine.
Thanks for teaching that. I will never forget where I started my first step.
Though, as you use hummus, I use pure boiled beans (my favorite part). I am an Indian by origin, so I make probably 10 to 12 different beans and it gives me change in my salads.
If Brian wants to know more about Indian spices (I doubt it though), I am here. I also experiment just like him.
    Love you both.
