A while ago I needed some peanut butter to help my dogs get their pills down. After looking through the labels of countless jars at the store and seeing that most of them were full of added sugars, oil and who knows what else, I decided to try making my own!

Armed with a Vitamix and two 16oz containers of dry roasted, unsalted peanuts, I was ready for my first attempt. It ended up being really easy and not only do the dogs love it, but Brian actually prefers this over store bought peanut butter!

If you don’t have a high speed blender (like a Vitamix or Blendtec), I would recommend trying this in a food processor. I’m not sure a regular blender will have enough power.

I’m not going to break this out as a recipe because it’s only one ingredient and one simple step. Well, okay, two if you count dumping the peanuts into the blender. After they are in there, you turn it up to the highest speed and blend until smooth and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. When using a Vitamix, the key is, while you are blending, use your tamper and alternate between pushing down into each corner. This will keep everything moving.

Getting the peanut butter out of the blender is definitely a pain, but if you have the under blade scraper, it will be a little easier. I usually get out as much as I can and then make some hot chocolate or a nice cream shake in it to help clean out the residual peanut butter.

For storage, I like to put it in glass Pyrex containers and keep it in the fridge. I don’t believe you need to refrigerate, but Brian prefers the texture and I assume it stays fresher a bit longer. I’ve also frozen this if I’m not going to use it up within a few weeks.
