It has been a long week (and it’s only Wednesday), so last night Brian and I decided to do something we pretty much NEVER do… go out to dinner! Finding a place to get a relatively “compliant” meal can be a challenge, but I knew just the place.
We went to Frida’s, a vegetarian restaurant in St. Louis that features the holy grail of whole food, plant-based eating… OIL-FREE vegan dishes! They are even labeled on the menu. It’s pretty exciting 🙂 We decided to take you along, so be sure to watch the video here.
What We Ate
I’ve been to Frida’s a few times before, but this was Brian’s first time! I told you… we don’t get out a lot 🙂 We wanted to sample so many things on the menu, but tried to use some restraint.
For an appetizer, we went with the Hummus Platter, which comes with oil-free hummus, a cucumber salad and pita. The cucumber salad does come with feta on it, so be sure to ask them to leave that out to keep it vegan. The hummus was delicious and it made a great start to our meal!
Up next, we tried a bowl of the soup of the day, which was Curry & Cabbage Cauliflower. Brian really enjoyed this one.
One of the cool things about Frida’s is that they feature a special dish each week, and many times these are vegan and oil-free. They post the specials on their Instagram account and I always keep an eye out for the latest one!
For his entrée, Brian ordered the weekly feature, which was an Organic Gingered Lentil & Chickpea Bowl with green beans, spinach, zucchini, onion, blistered tomato, cilantro and lemon zest on a bed of organic quinoa. He absolutely loved it.
I decided to go with their Signature Kale Salad, which has marinated kale, sprouted sunflower seeds, tomatoes, scallions, nutritional yeast and avocado. I added some of their Sunflower Taco Meat to it and it was a great combination.
I’ve been wanting to try out their Chocolate Avocado Mousse and it did not disappoint! It is definitely a very rich end to the meal and was perfect to share between the two of us.
One of the things we gave up when we switched to a whole food, plant-based diet was the “recreation” of going out to eat. I honestly don’t miss it because I love cooking meals at home with Brian, but sometimes it is nice to get out of the house and let someone else do the cooking.
Obviously we can’t go out and eat meals like this every day and expect to lose weight, but we love finding places where we can feel good about “indulging” a bit!

So glad you asked! I was absolutely thrilled when GreenFare Organic Café opened in Herndon VA, about 30 mins outside of DC, in November 2015. https://greenfare.com/ It is a small store located in an outdoor shopping center where there is also a MOM’s Organic Market, a local grocery store similar to Whole Foods. Everything in this café is oil-free, organic whole plant food without added salt or sugar. It is heaven. The owner (CEO), Gwyn Whittaker, started researching a healthier diet after her fiancé died suddenly at 50 years old from heart disease. She found the movie Forks Over Knives and set out on a mission to share the knowledge with others. I have met a few “celebrities” in the WFPB field there: Dr. Neal Barnard (runs 21-day Kickstart either for free on his PCRM website or for a fee in the café which includes all meals; also runs Barnard Medical Center in DC w/WFPB nutritionists), Dr. Colin Campbell (author of The China Study) and Chef Del Sroufe (author & contributor to many books & websites). The café has cooking classes, movie nights, comedy nights, environmental/animal rights speaker nights and books for sale. They have to-go meals in their small fridge or you can order a week’s meals at a time (a little blander than in-house meals, made more for Kickstart attendees). Their food is delicious. I had the best salad I’ve ever eaten there – so many ingredients and so many flavors! Gwyn is also a driving force behind the newly-created Fairfax VegFest held once a year in April. This year, 2020, it will be held on April 19. I have no connection with the cafe, just thankful they’re here.
