Have you ever walked down the produce aisles at the grocery store and wanted to try one of everything? Well, on today’s Krocks In The Kitchen video, we did just that. I bought one (well, actually, two) of EVERY kind of apple they had in stock at our local Trader Joe’s and we got to tasting!

On the day I went, they had 16 different apples (including the organic varieties). As I would learn later, there were actually 12 different “cultivars” represented in the 16 apples I picked up.

What is a cultivar, you ask? The definition is a “a plant variety that has been produced in cultivation by selective breeding.” So each variety – Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, etc. is a different cultivar.

For the first four varieties we tried, they had both organic and non-organic versions in stock. It was interesting to compare these side by side. The remaining eight apples were all non-organic.

Trader Joe’s is one of the only places I have found that sells apples at a flat price per apple (instead of by weight). In general, I actually find that this works out to my advantage when comparing prices.

Well, that’s enough talk… watch the video to see us try them out! You can also scroll down to get a complete list (with photos and prices) of all of the apples we tested.

Brian’s top picks were Envy, Rockit and SweeTango.

My top picks were Pink Lady, Envy and Granny Smith.

So what did we do with all of these apples? Do not fear… they all went to good use! Well, we’re actually still eating them, but we got creative, as you’ll see in our next video.

Fuji are my best. I find they stay crisper and fresh for longer. I wish you both a meery xmas and a better new year. Love you both, and love all your videos. This may be a personal question, but are you having children in the near future. Xx

For a grocery store apple, the Envy wins my vote.
Out of the grocery store, Northern Spy and Spartan to eat, Permain and Empire for pies.

A really fun video, Thank you.
