Back in June 2018, we started out on a weight loss journey, which has now turned into an adventure! We began by eating two weeks of nothing but absolutely plain baked potatoes, as inspired by Ray Cronise’s work with Penn Jillette. We often get associated with potatoes, but we only did that for two weeks and afterwards we transitioned to a whole food plant based diet.

Skip ahead two years and a LOT of plants, and here we are in June 2020. We’ve faced our share of challenges over this time, but we have stuck to our new lifestyle for the most part, and it’s time for another weigh-in video!

You might remember back at the end of May, Brian was just 10 pounds away from reaching 200 total pounds lost. He REALLY wanted to reach that “goal” by June 22nd, the two year anniversary of when we started this new lifestyle. I decided to join and in make it into a “10 Pound Challenge” with a few of our good friends. We got an update from our friends in this week’s episode of Brian’s podcast “I’m Losing It!” so go to ImLosingItPodcast.com and give it a listen. Check out this video for more about the challenge.

So the big question is… did he lose the 10 pounds???

Of course he did! He started on May 22nd at 324.6 and lost a total of 14 pounds, weighing in at 310.6 pounds on June 22nd. This brings his total weight loss over two years to an impressive 203.8 pounds!

I did not reach 10 pounds lost, but I didn’t expect to, and I’m really proud of the progress I made. I started the challenge at 160.2 and ended up at 153.8, for a total loss of 6.4 pounds. My total weigh loss is currently at 131.2 pounds.

We started two years ago at 799.4 pounds combined and are currently down to 464.4 pounds, for a combined loss of 335 pounds in two years!

We also took this as an opportunity to re-visit the Trader Joe’s we went potato shopping at and filmed for our very first YouTube video. Here are some photos comparing our footage from 2018 to 2020!

Thanks to everyone for cheering us along in this adventure and our recent “challenge.” Check out the video here and don’t forget to listen to the podcast to find out how our friends did!

I’m so excited to see your 2 year results. You have become such a handsome couple. I hope your health improvements have followed. You guys are to be commended for your stick-to-it-ive-ness.

As a general rule, allow 100 pounds for the first foot in height and for men an additional 5# per inch (190 for Brian) and an additional 4# per inch for women (124 for Jessica). I’m a 6 ft woman and weigh 140-145 and I’m not too thin.

Hey you two! I am so very happy for you! I too have been plant based vegan since April of 2018. Funny to think we started around the same time. Adventure is right. It’s been amazing! You both look great! Keep up the great work and inspirational videos!

My mom has a Kitchen Pray…that was hung in our kitchen with Loving Care…

And one day back the early 1960s…it dawned on her to sing this very pray to a well known Irish tune called McManara’s Band…

I would like to offer it to you to write the pray down on a plate/ piece of wood/ an 12 inch aluminium serving tray…such as we all had cherished….
    It went something like this…
    ….MY KITCHEN PRAY”
LORD , PLEASE BLESS AND KEEP THIS KITCHEN , LET EVERY MEAL I/WE MAKE BUILD HEALTHY BODIES LOVING HEARTS TO ALL WHOM WILL PARTAKE/ AND EACH ONE WHO OASSES THROUGH FEEL YOUR LOVING POWER & LOVING ARMS AND RETURN AGAIN SOME DAY…AMEN”

    My mom would sing”

I’m a big fan and watch you guys on YouTube and read this blog. (Sorry, I don’t do social media.) I started my journey “adventure” in September of 2017. I was a 330 pound vegetarian. I did the 2 weeks of potatoes and lost 20 pounds. Then I found you guys at the end of 2018. You have been an inspiration to me and I just wanted to thank you. I am currently 208 pounds and still losing. Also, Jessica I know you like to read about PlantBased Diets, so check out Dr. McDougall’s site, he has all his ebooks for free right now. Thank you, and keep being you! You guys are an inspiration! You don’t need to post this, I just wanted to connect, and say thank you!

    Jessica and Brian,
Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with me! Today I watched Jessica share her struggles with binging on peanut butter cups. It’s amazing to me how these small indulgences can set us on a path to destruction— both physically and mentally. I struggle with the same. Like you, Jessica, I was 285 pounds at my highest weight. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and started taking my eating habits more seriously. I watched a video documentary series created by Jon McMahon showing how he adopted wfpb sos by interviewing doctors and nutrition experts in the field of nutrition and lost more than 200 lbs. So I was inspired to adopt a wfpb lifestyle and am now 206. During the initial months of COVID I began eating SAD. Prior to that I had been near 190. I went up to 215. It was always my hope to make my first goal and remain below 200.

Recently I discovered Brenè Brown’s work on vulnerability. I always lived by the mantra “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” Brenè’s work on vulnerability talks a lot about courage. You were so courageous today!!! Seeing you and hearing your admission helped me to see that I am not alone!!! (Please realize that I am doing the wfpb sos at home by myself living with 3 people— husband, daughter, and son—2 of which are overweight.). When you spoke about loving someone and wanting them to be happy, thus not being “willing” to correct their behavior of bad eating, that really resonated with me. I am still trying to figure out how to get my husband and daughter on board with this. He struggles with anxiety. She struggles with depression.
None of us is totally compliant. We’re all human. Like you, I am the sneaker of snacks. My taunt was chocolate chips for baking. Last week I had bought every flavor of lays potato chips under the guise of “I thought the kids would like to do a taste test.” While I didn’t eat an entire bag, I did eat quite a few. Made me sick. My gut issues are another story.

Brenè says that “vulnerability is having the courage to show up when you can’t control the outcome.” I hope your takeaways from my message to you are that you are not alone and that you are brave. You are blessed to be together.

Brian your faith and weekly church visits I think are a big part of your adventure to goal weight. I say a rosary each morning (I’m catholic). When I don’t say the rosary, I go off my adventure. Keep the faith!

Thank you again for helping me on this adventure. I truly am so appreciative of your story being shared with the world.
    Take care,
    Mary Lou

You have inspired me over the last 3 months…i began with a potato diet that didnt work as i added too much SOS additives and too many excuses: I especially like this update that tells of weight loss goals and achievement as well as picture. I look for recipes on inspiration still weekly on your site. Thanks to you both for your example and tips. Look forward to more.
