We have really been enjoying trying out new things in our “The Krocks Try” series, so we thought we’d test out a few more fruits for you! Today we are tasting star fruit, dragon fruit and prickly pear.

Watch the video to see what we thought, and let us know in the comments if there’s anything you want us to try out in a future episode!

Star Fruit

Up first, I picked up a ripe yellow star fruit for $3.99 at a local grocery store called Dierbergs. The smaller green (not ripe) ones were $2.99 each at Whole Foods. At both stores, these were priced per item instead of by weight.

I had never tasted a star fruit before, so I had no idea what to expect. I just love how beautiful they are! You can easily cut them into pretty little star shapes, but do watch out for the seeds. As far as we know, they are not edible and they can be a bit difficult to get out once you slice them.

The taste was really good, but in my opinion their best quality is just how nice they look. One star fruit would go a long way to jazz up a fruit platter!

In the video, Brian goes into detail about all of the great properties of each fruit, so be sure to watch.

Dragon Fruit

Up next, I searched high and low for a nice red (pink) dragon fruit but couldn’t find one. So I picked up this lovely yellow dragon fruit instead. It was priced at $6.99/lb and mine weighed 0.63 pounds for $4.40.

I didn’t know that there are actually yellow dragon fruits, so at first I thought this one just wasn’t ripe. However, after a bit of research, I realized that it was just a different variety of dragon fruit.

Ours was so delicious and sweet! This was definitely our favorite of the fruits we tried in this video. I have read that yellow dragon fruit can be sweeter than the red variety, so now I am interested to try both and compare!

If they weren’t so expensive, I’d be eating these on the regular for sure.

Prickly Pear

Finally, I was super excited to get these fresh prickly pears (aka cactus pears)! They were $2.49 per pound and my three totaled in at 0.75 pounds for $1.87 total.

I’ve been a fan of prickly pear flavored things for a good long while, so I kind of knew what flavor to expect, but I have never tried the whole fruit. We were definitely in for a surprise!

Watch the video to see the silliness that ensued, but basically we didn’t realize they are full of super crunchy seeds and then I tried to strain them and… yeah. LOL.

They are very easy to “peel.” You just cut off a bit of the ends and cut a slit in the side and the fruit comes right out!

I need to experiment more with these because they have SUCH a lovely flavor and there has to be an easier way to extract it! Please let me know if you have any experience with this.

We had a grand time trying these out fruits and expanding our horizons! Before we switched to a whole food plant-based diet, I wasn’t adventurous enough to try new things, so I feel like I get way more variety now.
