There are some topics that weigh really heavy on me (no pun intended). Honestly, we almost didn’t put out a video today, but the more we thought about it, we realized this one was important.

Deciding to put our lives out there on YouTube was not an easy decision, and we definitely had no idea what we were getting into when we made that decision. We just kind of threw a few videos out there, and for whatever reason, people seemed to connect with us.

While we always strive to be transparent with our audience, we also realize that we have the right to keep some things private. Last year, I made the tough decision to open up about the anxiety and depression that I have battled with for most of my life.  Since then, so many of you have reached out to me and let me know what that has meant to you, and I can’t fully express how much that has meant to me. To know that I could have helped even one person makes all of the vulnerability worth it.

These past few years, I have grown in so many ways, and I truly think “Krocks In The Kitchen” is a big part of that. We hope to continuing entertaining, educating, learning and laughing along with this amazing community that has grown around us for many years to come. For today’s video, we decided to talk about mental health. Now more than ever, so many people are struggling, and we are here to remind you that it’s okay.

We’re also here to remind ourselves that it’s okay.

For the majority of our 14+ year relationship, I was the one who had all of the mental health struggles. Or at least I thought that was the case. Brian always seemed to have it together when it came to mental health. I think his faith is a big part of that. When I finally started to get help for myself, I realized some of the sacrifices Brian has made for me over the years. He buried his internal struggles because he knew I couldn’t handle them. My own brain was busy putting so much of a burden on itself, I couldn’t possibly handle knowing that he was struggling as well.

He has always been the calm to my storm, and for years, I desperately needed that calm.

It has taken time for Brian to start sharing his own mental health struggles with me. As I have gotten help for myself over these past few years, I am in a much better place these days. I think he is still learning that I am stronger now, and I can help him bear the load.

The last month or so has been rough on both of us for many reasons, but we are more determined and committed than ever to keep growing, learning and getting healthier through a whole food, plant-based diet. We thank every one of you for being on this adventure with us. It truly means more to us than you could ever know.

I appreciate your honesty. I don’t feel so alone with these issues. My husband is my rock and I need to get well so I can start being his.

  2. ScarletNumber says:

It’s amazing to me how on your wedding day Brian was the fat one, but now it seems like Jessica is the fat one.

  3. Mary Miller says:

Jessica. I watch your videos with much appreciation. Wasn’t doing PBWF properly until start of March. Hit it hard and took a 21 day summit with Chef AJ. I felt so much better and like my clothes were a bit looser.
Forward to today. My daughter took a back to back photo of me and her son to show his height spurt
All I could see was the fat, old forever me. Have had the dry tears since.
I am not going to stop Plant based but fear I’m delusional. Again. Thanks for listening. My mind is my enemy but I made a promise to commit to this for one year. Mary.

  4. Hi Brian and Jessica,
I know it’s difficult to share these subjects, especially online and on Youtube. You’ve done alot of hard work and made so much progress. Think about all the hundreds of thousands of people out there you have never met that you have motivated and inspired to start taking action today for their own health and well being! 🙂
Be patient with your selves, show compassion to your changing body and it’s needs or cravings. Don’t beat yourself up if you need to eat something “non vegan”. Trying to be perfect or 100% compliant can create a lot of mental and emotional distress.

Flexibility will ensure success! Or as Paul Atredies says “I will bend like a reed in the wind.”

    Thank you for sharing,
    Rebecca Brooks-Guelfi
